Synopsis:

'When Brahma is awake, the world is reshaped. When he sleeps, chaos reigns. Is Brahma asleep during our journey through India, or is he awake?'

These sentences were written by a Dutch tourist in his diary during a fortnight-long guided tour through India. Life in India looks to him and his travelling companions like a miraculous chaos, but for the Indians themselves, it seems to run its course following the natural rules of a familiar ritual. The journey takes the tourists to well-known places such as Delhi, Agra and Varnasi, while the province of Rajasthan is explored thoroughly.

After the first superficial introduction, the tourists gradually develop a need for more insight into the people and culture of the subcontinent. Some make sincere attempts to understand something of the Indians they meet, but they do not have much success. India is a different world. You can look at it and be fascinated, but it is an illusion to think that you can understand the country as a western tourist. Seeing the film is looking at India over the shoulders of these travellers and seeing how they sometimes become involved in the game.
